The gang of five, which was arrested by the Delhi Police for abducting 18-month-old Ishaan Singh from his residence in southeast Delhi’s Maharani Bagh on Sunday, had tried its best to dodge arrest.

“They took all precautions to avoid arrest. They didn’t allow Pratima to kidnap the child on her own since she had been hired through a verified source. The gang also kept changing their hideouts besides switching-off their phones to escape technical surveillance. What’s more, they dressed him (Ishaan) up like a baby girl. We may have been dealing with novices, but they were a bunch of very smart abductors,” said a police officer.

According to figures available with the Delhi Police, all the 34 persons arrested for kidnapping in 2010 were first-timers. While employees/ex-employees and neighbours were found to have been involved in

two cases each, other known persons perpetrating kidnapping for ransom were involved in six cases. Three cases saw the involvement of distant relatives. Perpetrators were unknown only in two cases.

“The gang had chalked out everything. They had ensured that Savita, posing as Seema, would walk into Singh’s residence and ask for a job just when their present maid Pratima was on leave. Though she hails from Orissa, she was told to speak in an accent peculiar to Jharkhand to avoid suspicion,” the officer said.

Police also pointed to the gang’s initial plan of restricting their movement as opposed to risking arrest by crossing the city’s border. “Instead of smuggling him out of the city, they took him to a rented hideout just a few kilometres away where they had made adequate arrangements by stocking up on diapers and Ishaan’s favourite biscuits. They wanted to wait for the heat wave to get over before making their first demand for ransom,” he added.
