Gurgaon Police on Saturday nabbed another nurse, Rebecca, an alleged accomplice of the absconding kidney racket mastermind, Amit Kumar. She used to look after patients at his Gurgaon clinic where the illegal transplants were carried out.
Police sources said Rebecca, hailing from Assam, was now employed in a hospital in Faridabad and had stopped working for Amit. The police did not disclose the name of the hospital. "It is too early to disclose such details," a police official said, requesting anonymity.
The number of arrests and detentions in the kidney racket has now risen to 13. On Jan 31, another nurse, Linda, employed at the Capital's leading government hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, was arrested along with Ramesh and Suresh, cooks of Amit, and his driver Harpal.
Kidney racket kingpin, Amit Kumar alias Santosh Rameshwar Raut, had employed Rebecca two years back at the Gurgaon clinic from where he conducted his illegal trade. Rebecca used to take care of patients at the intensive care unit of the clinic where the illegal transplants were done, said the police.
During her nearly two-month stint with "Dr Horror", as Amit Kumar has become known, Rebecca allegedly witnessed five kidney transplants on three foreign and two Indian nationals. "She later left Amit and joined a hospital in Faridabad," police sources told IANS.
Rebecca's revelations will help police to form a strong case to nail Amit Kumar.
On Friday, Interpol issued red corner notices for Amit and his brother, Jeewan Raut, for running the racket that has international links.
Amit, 40, is suspected to have escaped to Canada through Nepal. His family has been living in Canada.
Moradabad Police Friday arrested KK Aggarwal, a doctor and an alleged accomplice of Amit, from Alwar in Rajasthan following disclosures made by Upendra Kumar Aggarwal, another key accused currently in police custody.
