Nearly 10 days after cases of alleged serial sexual abuse emerged from Arya Orphanage, the Delhi government on Tuesday began the medical examination of its residents. But as only one medical team was available, only 20 children could be examined on Tuesday.

“The boy who had allegedly sodomised a 12-year-old boy was formally apprehended on Tuesday. His bail plea was rejected,” a senior police officer said.

According to sources, the government will also be conducting the physical examination of all those children who have complained of sexual abuse. The government has also appointed an administrator who has asked the orphanage authority to conduct medical examination of all orphanage residents. “We have appointed more officers to assist administrator PP Dhal,” added the official.

A note has also been put up to the Delhi chief secretary for forming a three-member fact-finding committee to look into the deeper questions such as overall management of such child institutions and funding.

Delhi chief minister also said they are looking into the possibility of amending the present Juvenile Justice Act. “Many child institutions in the city have not been getting registered as no penalty can be imposed in them. If need be, we will seek an amendment,” Dikshit said.

Police have also taken statements of three children on Tuesday and are in the process of convincing more children to record their statements.

An 11-year-old girl resident of Arya orphanage had died on December 24 after being raped over a period of time. A report by an NGO and CWC had pointed out cases of serial sexual and physical abuse in the orphanage.
