Seven hundred decoy women marshals for the security of women, double-shift schools to tide over the shortage of buildings, cheaper power by promoting LED bulbs — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has promised these and much more as it makes a strong pitch for Delhi.
The party’s new posters featuring chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which are being put up across the city, mentions these promises. So far, Modi was the main focus in the party’s posters.
Bedi shares space with Modi in the new posters, asking people to vote for a majority government, sources said. “Modiji ka aelaan, bijli bill ke hone aadhe daam: Har ghar ke liye kishto par sasti LED lights ka intezaam (power bills will be slashed by 50%, every household would be provided LED bulbs on installment),” one of the poster’s reads.
The state unit is upbeat as good governance, anti-corruption and development are being promised in the name of its chief ministerial candidate.
Sources said rather than making tall promises such as constructing new schools and hospitals, the party wants to highlight issues that it can tackle immediately.
Promises such as opening 70 mobile OPDs for each constituency, running schools in double-shifts as construction of new buildings will take time, health cards for Delhiites are achievable in the short term, they said.
Women security is another important issue and Bedi has suggested women marshals should be deployed at strategic places such as bus stops, near public toilets and metro stations to tackle the problem of harassment.
“Our campaign is based on providing good governance to the people and cracking down on corruption. Bedi was part of the anti-corruption campaign and had worked closely with Anna Hazare too. Now our workers can counter AAP much more aggressively. At the same time, we have to inform people that Bedi is our chief ministerial candidate as we didn’t have a CM candidate so far,” said a senior BJP leader.
