External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today chastised ministerial colleague Jairam Ramesh for his controversial remarks in China saying ministers must be "cautious and restrained" while speaking on foreign soil.

"Ministers, when they make statements especially from foreign soil, I think they have to be extremely cautious and restrained in criticising the policies of our government regardless of which department it is," Krishna told CNN-IBN.

He said the clarification given by the Home Ministry should also be accepted in view of the Union Environment Minister's remarks.

Ramesh, while on a tour of China earlier this month, had dubbed the Home Ministry's policies towards Chinese companies as "overly defensive" and "alarmist".

Krishna said if other ministry has something to say about foreign policy formulation and the implementation and it would be the endeavour of the Ministry of External Affairs to get them onboard.

"It would be our endeavour to get them onboard with our thinking as to how we are conducting our foreign policy and if there are deficiencies we can certainly correct them -- there is always room for mid-course adjustments, we are willing to do that," he said.
