Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna has directed MCD to offer some relaxation to the sealing of paying guest accommodations (PGs) at South Extension-1.
On Tuesday, nearly 150 girls had been rendered homeless when the MCD sealed 16 flats in the area, five of which had been rented out to girls as PGs.
On the MCD’s radar were another six PGs. However, after L-G’s order, the MCD will not be sealing these properties till at least Monday. The directions were issued to allow girls to find an alternate accommodation.
“Many PGs in South Extension are running in buildings with unauthorised constructions. These girls were not aware of this fact till the MCD started sealing the properties. The L-G’s order came on humanitarian grounds,” said a senior MCD official. He added that the civic agency has, however, been told to carry out sealing of other properties.
The building department of Central zone has been on a sealing drive since Monday. Sealing action will from November 28 onwards again. Sources say another 60-70 properties will be sealed. Already, the department has sealed a total of 39 flats in the area. Many of these flats had added floors and extensions without proper permissions.
“We wanted to seal buildings on Thursday too but we did not have adequate police force with us,” said an MCD official.
In south Delhi, demolition was however carried out against 29 properties in areas such as the Freedom Fighter Colony, Sangam Vihar, Gautam Nagar and Yusuf Sarai.
