Then you came along with the suitcase and a song…
Perhaps the last few words of this Doors number would light a common spark in most. Escape, a music and arts fest in Naukuchiatal, Uttarakhand, is a two-day fest that begins today, with plenty of good music to catch up on tomorrow as well. Starting today for the six-hour road trip from Delhi, too, may not be a bad idea.
The venue for the fest is Lakeside Resort, which has played host to several musical getaways such as the Lakeside Jam and Music in the Hills, held earlier this year. Escape will have one large corner of the serene Naukuchiatal (lake with nine corners) as a backdrop.
A mix of amateur, closet and professional musicians add a different dimension to Escape. There’s place for everyone — from new enthusiasts to old-time sopranos.
The fest will feature sufi-qawwali singer Dhruv Sangaria of Da Saaz with another act, Rooh, along with Vedanta (Indian classical fusion), Astitva (Indi-pop) on day one. Sunny Side Up (Jazz), Boomerang (Rock) and Babylon Exit (Reggae) will be there on day two.
Free jams will happen through the day alongside photography, painting and digital arts exhibition.
There is also a flea market, informal interactions with artists, yoga and tattoo sessions.
While you’re there, take the narrow dirt track across the lake. Post sundown is the best time to visit the venue.
The organisers have tied up with five resorts in and around Naukuchiatal. The per person packages for two nights and three days, on twin sharing basis are — Rs 7,500 for premium rooms and Rs 6,000 for deluxe rooms. The package includes food, stay as well as entry to the festival. Make sure you carry sunscreen, a torch, mosquito repellent and warm clothes.
