A boasting 55-year-old woman and a gullible part-time domestic help might have been the plot for the August 19 Laxmi Nagar double murders, police believe.
Police said, a gloating Rajni Thakur had falsely boasted in front of her domestic help Chandana that the pair of bangles that she was wearing was made out of gold and had cost her Rs 2 lakh. The bangles in fact had been made of brass but Chandana believed otherwise after Rajni’s claim and planned the robbery along with her husband Rakhal, another temporary maid Urmila and Urmila's husband Prem Babu.
As per their plan, all the accused entered the house and overpowered the mother-daughter duo. While Chandana brutally slit Rajni’s mother Rampati's, 85, throat with a knife without seeking help from her accomplices, it was Prem who slit Rajni's throat with another knife.
"After the murders the accused removed the jewellery items the victims were wearing. Before fleeing the house, they also ransacked the entire house in search of cash," said Ajay Kumar, DCP (east). He added that all the four accused have been arrested and the robbed items, including two mobile phones, have been recovered. The accused had planned the murders for robbery on August 17 but could not execute it because of the arrival of the victims's close relative Badku.
The arrests came following investigation into the sensational double murder case which initially hinted that the victims might have been killed for property. More than five teams, including district's special staff led by Inspector Rakesh Dixit, began their investigation and prepared a list of people known to the victims.
During questioning of Badku, who was one of the suspects, investigators learnt that he had seen Chandana and Urmila sleeping in the house on August 17. The police tried to trace the two women but they were found missing with their husbands. They were eventually nabbed in Greater Noida through electronic surveillance. Their interrogation revealed that they committed the crime to make some quick and easy money.
