Here's some good news for motorists who take the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (SPM) Marg on a daily basis. Soon, the left turns on the busy intersection will be made free for traffic.
After constant persuasion by the Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi lieutenant governor Tejendra Khanna on Friday ordered the left turns at SPM Marg be freed for traffic.
"Opening the left turns will definitely give us huge breather to ease traffic congestion, especially during peak hours," joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg said.
The left turns at SPM Marg and Netaji Subhash Marg Crossings were closed permanently more than six months ago under the Commonwealth Games city beautification project, causing major traffic congestion for vehicles going from Subhash Marg to SPM Marg, and from SPM Marg to GPO Kashmere Gate.
"The construction has stopped free flow of traffic. This resulted in long snarls in all directions, affecting the traffic till the Red Fort crossing," said a traffic police officer.
The L-G has also reportedly asked municipal commissioner KS Mehra to assess the traffic pattern on the arterial road and see if all cycles, rickshaws and non-motorised goods vehicles ply on the cycle rickshaw track that the MCD had created on
"If the cycle track is not properly used, the L-G may order its removal,” said a senior traffic police officer.
Mehra, however, was not available for comment.
Lauding the decision, Sanjay Bhargava, general secretary of Chandni Chowk Sarv Vypar Mandal, said: "The project is in complete violation of the Master Plan for Delhi 2021. The planner should be made accountable for this and public money spent on this should be recovered from the planner."
In the proposed urban extension, space reservation is to be kept for provision of grade separator, clover leaves and left slip roads at intersection of all roads of 30 m and above RoW (right of way).
