A deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and constable were injured after liquor mafia attacked a raiding team in Pilkhuwa town near Ghaziabad on Tuesday night.
Armed with iron rods, sticks and stones, a group of about 50 alleged smugglers thrashed the joint team of excise and police officials who had gone to raid an illicit liquor shop at Atrauli village.
Pilkhuwa DSP Amit K Nagar sustained injuries on his head, while one of four constables inspector Ajay Yadav’s hand was broken. Yadav escaped unhurt and fled the spot, police said.
The police have lodged an FIR against shop owner Rajendra Rajput and 50 unidentified persons. Ten cartons of illicit liquor were also seized during the raid, the officer said.
Locals alleged that a heavy police force arrived within 30 minutes after the incident, which ransacked seven houses and beat up women.
