The man who died and his four friends who were injured in an accident near Raj Ghat were returning from a party in Gurgaon and were lost.

The police said the accident occurred because of poor visibility on the road, because of which they landed up near Raj Ghat, instead of Rohini, where they were headed.

“When they left Gurgaon they asked for directions to Rohini. There was such dense fog that they lost way and reached Raj Ghat instead,” said a senior police officer.

The police said as soon as they reached Ring Road near Rajghat, their sport utility vehicle, a Scorpio, hit a road divider and it was thrown over to the other carriageway.

A truck on that carriageway then rammed it and the man, 40-year-old Umesh Singh, was killed. After hitting the SUV, the truck rammed the railings, but luckily the vehicle did not fall off the parapet wall of Ring Road bypass. The truck driver was the one to call the police.

The injured were then taken to Jaiprakash Narayan Hospital, where Singh was declared dead on arrival. Three others were seriously injured while the fourth received minor injuries. According to the police, all of them were drunk, as medical examination revealed that they had traces of alcohol in their bloodstream.

A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered at the Daryaganj police station.
