Economic (Hons) is one of the most sought after courses in Delhi University, with plenty of students trying to get admissions in the college.
From this academic session, LSR has introduced a 4% negative weightage for the students of commerce stream, technically known as the accounts stream. Keeping in account the popularity of this course and the reputation of LSR, the news comes as a pleasant surprise for the students of Humanities stream.
Dr. Kanika Khandelwal, Head of the Economics Department, LSR says, "LSR is basically an Arts and Humanities college and economics is essentially a Humanities subject. It has been observed by the Department that more accounts students make it to the course due to higher scores in Boards."
"However, the Humanities students are good at writing descriptive answers and possess better analytical and writing skills, thus an edge is given to them over the accounts stream students. The negative weightage for accounts stream is not a deterrent for them, rather an encouragement for humanities stream. This measure has been taken to ensure adequate representation of humanities students in the course."
This decision will now help improve the number of Humanities students in the course. However, this will definitely make it tougher for students of commerce stream.
Opines Rachita, a commerce student from Bal Bharati Public School, Rohini, "Even after securing a 93% in best four, I haven't made it either to SRCC or LSR. I have made it to Hansraj though. The accounts stream is the worst sufferer. We have to face negative weightage in almost all courses. However, all reputed colleges, including SRCC give positive weightage to science students, even though their subjects are totally unrelated to the concerned subjects."
Now it is for all of us to see how effective this measures proves to be.
