A team of officers belonging to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday allegedly grilled the arrested suspects of the September 29 Malegaon blast, Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit, to probe his links with a blast that occurred in Nanded in April 2006.
The CBI team, which was led by the agency’s Joint Director Arun Kumar, who is overseeing its probe into several terror incidents including that of Nanded, spent around five hours at the Byculla-based headquarters of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in the city, according to a senior police officer, who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to the media.
CBI’s spokesperson Harsh Bhal, when contacted by HT, however, said: “ Why does CBI have to do with the Maharashtra ATS probe? I do not know whether or not a CBI team led by Joint Director Arun Kumar was in Mumbai today. Even if he was there that could be a personal visit.”
Sources, however, claimed that the CBI team also went to ATS’ Kalachowkie police station where the Malegaon blast accused have been lodged.
In a powerful explosion that occurred at the house of a retired Public Works Department (PWD) executive engineer Laxman Rajkondwar in Nanded, two alleged bomb-makers — Laxman’s son and ‘Bajrang Dal member’ Naresh — and another group member Himanshu Panse were killed. Four others — Maruthi Wagh, Yogesh Vidulkar, Gururaj Tuptewar and Rahul Pande — were grievously injured and later succumbed to their injuries.
Pande allegedly claimed that Panse had planned the bomb blasts at mosques in Jalna, Purna and Parbhani in 2003 and 2004 in that state.
Initially probed by the ATS, the case was handed over to the CBI in 2006. The CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case a few months ago.
