Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan today described the recent clashes between advocates and police in the Madras High Court as “very, very unfortunate.”

“I can only say that it is very, very unfortunate,” he said, adding that it was not possible for him to comment on how these incidents started as he was not fully aware of the developments.

Clashes between advocates, agitating on the Sri Lankan issue, and police broke out on Thursday over arrest of some lawyers accused of assaulting Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy in the court.

A judge and many police personnel besides advocates were injured in stone pelting and subsequent police lathicharge.
