The body of a nine-year-old boy, who was abducted from his east Delhi residence more than a fortnight ago, was recovered from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on January 16, police said on Tuesday.
"The deceased has been identified as Chetan, a Class IV student at a local government school. He had gone missing from his Kalyanpuri residence on Jan 3," said a senior police officer.
According to police, the victim's family has alleged that their neighbour, Devi Ram, 25, who is a native of Meerut, abducted Chetan on January 3, before whisking him away to Uttar Pradesh.
"They claim that they started receiving ransom calls from Devi Ram almost immediately and R40,000 was the price demanded for Chetan's safe release," the officer said. According to police, the victim's father, Banwari Lal had managed to arrange the ransom money and went to Nauchandi Ground in Meerut on January 10 to negotiate his son's release.
"Lal was told that his son would be released safely only if he left the money at a particular spot on the ground. However, Lal felt that something was wrong when he reached the area and demanded that his son be set free first,” the officer said.
“However, since the accused had already killed Chetan, out of fear of getting caught, Lal had to return empty handed. He then approached us," the officer added.
Police said Devi Ram was detained for questioning about the incident, during which he broke down and confessed. "We have arrested him and further investigations into the matter are underway," the officer added.
