A 22-year-old law student fought a legal battle against her father, who had raped and assaulted her since she was 13. The woman is a resident of Pitampura in northwest Delhi.
The victim had mustered courage to fight back in 2008. Her grandmother helped her file an FIR against her father.
Last week, a Delhi court convicted the victim's father and sentenced him to eight years' imprisonment.
Additional sessions judge Yashwant Kumar supported his verdict with the victim and her grandmother's statement. The doctor's testimony too corroborated the girl's statement. The victim's mother, who faced abetment charges, was acquitted for lack of evidence.
Dinesh Sharma (name changed) was arrested but was released on bail.
The victim registered a complaint of physical assault against her father at the age of 17. During her medical examination, the doctors observed that she was subjected to extreme sexual activity.
The victim told the police that her mother used to administer some liquid, which made her unconscious and then her father would rape her.
During his arguments, public prosecutor Atul Srivastav contended that as the accused was the father, he should be sentenced for life.
