A special fast track court on Friday awarded a 50-year-old man five years rigorous imprisonment for trying to rape a nine-year-old girl in 2010.
Relying on the testimony of the victim, Additional Sessions Judge MC Gupta convicted Madan, a labourer from Bihar. He also imposed a fine of R6,000 on Madan.
According to the police, the incident took place on July 19, 2010, when the girl - along with his father and mother - had gone to a relative’s house in Tikri Khurd in northwest Delhi. In his complaint to the police, the father said that when he was sleeping in another room, the girl woke him up and told him that Madan tried to rape her and slapped her when she tried to raise and alarm.
A police case was registered, under various sections, including rape, against Madan the next day.
Madan had claimed that he had given a loan to the girl’s father and uncle and when he demanded his money back, they implicated him in the false case.
Jail for molestation
A man, who had molested the minor neighbour of his physically-challenged neighbour, has been sentenced to two year imprisonment by a Delhi court.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ekta Gauba also imposed a fine of R5,000 on the convict Pradeep Kumar.
The court also denied Kumar’s plea for release on probation, saying he “did not deserve it” as “offence against women are on rise in the city, and it is a serious public order problem if the women are not safe in their own houses in the night.”
