A man, who killed his wife after suspecting her character last year, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court which relied on the eyewitness account of his 20-year-old daughter.
Additional Sessions Judge Babu Lal also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on convict Balbir Singh, 43, after holding him guilty under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC.
Singh was apprehended on January 19 last year after a complaint was lodged with Nabi Karim police station by his daughter that he had stabbed her mother to death.
During her deposition before the court, the girl stated that her father was a tippler and used to suspect the character of her mother, which caused frequent quarrels between them.
On the fateful day, her father, she said, took out a dagger and stabbed her mother Santosh, resulting in her death.
The court, after examining 19 witnesses, found credence in the daughter's version and also referred to the post mortem examination of 38-year-old deceased, which revealed that there were 10 wounds on her body.
It rejected Singh's plea that the prosecution had failed to rope in public witnesses in the case, saying that in such cases of family matters, neighbours generally do not come forward to record their statements.
