In an alleged case of suicide inside a police station, a 25-year-old man hanged himself on Monday evening.

The family members and a stringer with a local news channel alleged that the man committed suicide after the police assaulted him.

The incident took place on Monday around 10 p.m. at Vijay Vihar Police Station.

The deceased has been identified as Vikas, a resident of Vijay Vihar. The police said Vikas was having an affair with a 30-year-old married woman from the same locality.

“On Monday evening, the woman’s husband found the two in a compromising position. He then started assaulting Vikas, who ran away and made a PCR call,” said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

A PCR van then went to the woman’s house and took both Vikas and the husband to the police station. Here the police allegedly assaulted Vikas, his family claimed.

“He was severely thrashed by them. They would not listen to his pleas. They used batons and kicked him,” said Vimal Verma, a local reporter, who claimed he was present at the police station.

The police said the case investigating officer found Vikas hanging from a window in one of the rooms at the police station. “He had used his sweater for hanging. No one was present in the room when this happened,” the officer said.

Vikas was taken to Ambedkar Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat later said Vikas was not assaulted and the police had not in any way abetted his suicide. However, investigations in the case were underway.
