A 30-year-old man was arrested in north-west Delhi with the help of a couple for allegedly cheating several people by withdrawing money from ATM booths using their cards, police said today.

Paras Luthra was apprehended from Majlish Park in Adarsh Nagar on Friday while he allegedly attempted to cheat the couple who were withdrawing money from an ATM, a senior police official said.

Luthra, a resident of Jahangirpuri who has served as a sales executive earlier and is presently into tour and travel business, was allegedly involved in five similar cases.

"He used to wear dark clothes and a cap at the time of his operations so that his face cannot be identified. He was aware of the CCTV camera and was functioning in such a manner that his face is not identified in the CCTV cameras installed in the ATM cabin," the official said.

The couple Mohd Sharif and his wife Shahla went to an ATM booth where they met Luthra. He was already inside the booth, where he was pretending to do some transaction.

"The ATM cabin has two machines in it. The couple had withdrawn some amount from the ATM using her card. When they were about to leave the ATM, Luthra told them that they had not locked their account and the same can be misused by anybody.

"He convinced them to put the ATM card again by using the password or pin code for locking the account successfully.

The accused made them insert their ATM card in the machine 3-4 times using the pin code to complete the process," the official said.

Luthra, meanwhile, managed to change the ATM card of the complainant discreetly with another card of the same bank in such a manner that the complainant and his wife did not have any clue that their original ATM card had been changed.
