One Blueline bus injured him and another ran over him, all in a matter of 20 minutes.
In a bizarre stroke of misfortune, a 38-year-old man, who miraculously escaped being killed by a Blueline bus the first time, was killed by another Blueline bus 20 minutes later.
On the last day of the year, the ‘killer line’ toll rose to 118.
The two accidents took place in the Paharganj and Mandir Marg areas.
The deceased, Raj Kumar, a labourer and resident of Nabi Karim, had left home for work around 9.45 am, and was on his way to Sadar Police Station road when a Blueline bus on route number 19 — plying between Jahangirpuri and New Delhi Railway Station — hit him from behind.
The incident happened at 10 am. Kumar suffered some injuries in the accident. A few local residents placed him in an autorickshaw and left for Lady Hardinge Hospital.
“In the meantime, the local residents caught the errant bus driver, Preet Pal, and handed him over to the police. The police arrested him and impounded the bus,” said a senior police officer.
The police said that, while on the way to the hospital, Kumar told the people accompanying him that he felt fine and wanted to get off the auto.
“The people inside the auto told us that Kumar just jumped out and started crossing the road,” said the officer.
One of the eyewitnesses said that, while Kumar was crossing the road, another Blueline bus on route number GL-91 — plying between Nangloi and New Delhi Railway Station — crushed him under its wheels right outside Banwari Lal Hospital at 10.20 am.
“The bus was speeding and the driver was not able to apply brakes on time. Kumar was crushed under the bus and died on the spot,” said Naresh Kumar, one of the witnesses of the incident.
Bystanders immediately called up the police and caught the driver Jaipal Singh. He was handed over to the police. Kumar’s body was later sent to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for post-mortem examination.
