After an unsuccessful attempt at setting her ablaze, a four-month-pregnant woman was stabbed her husband on Thursday at village Wazidpur. Luckily, the woman survived the stabbing, just as she had the burning attempt.
The victim, Neeraj Devi (23) suffered deep stab wounds at three spots on her body. Dowry was reportedly the cause of the assault and burning attempt.
Neeraj Devi told Hindustan Times at the district hospital, "This morning, my husband and mother-in-law brought in logs of woods, placed them in the bedroom and set it ablaze. They pushed me into the fire and bolted the door from outside."
"I suffered burn injuries on my hands, but extinguished the fire by rolling on the floor. Luckily, the bolt on the door was weak, which helped me open it easily and rush out of the room," said Devi.
"But seeing me alive, my husband, Amit Kumar, took a large knife and stabbed me. I suffered stab injuries on the left thigh, left leg and left hand. On hearing my screams, tenants came to my rescue, after which my husband and other family members fled, leaving me bleeding. The neighbours informed my brother and took me to the hospital," said Devi.
“Neeraj Devi, has three deep stab wounds. She was four months pregnant. She was referred to the gynaecologist," said Dr Arvind Singh, duty doctor at the hospital.
Her brother Ramesh Singh told Hindustan Times, "Neeraj was married to Amit on February 7, 2007. Ever since the first day, her husband had been demanding more dowry. We had given Rs.1 lakh for his shop last year. Now, he was asking for a new car. She was physically and mentally tortured for not getting the car.”
