A 34-year-old lawyer was arrested at Saket’s DLF Place mall on Saturday evening for allegedly recording objectionable videos of women wearing short skirts and dresses through a spy camera hidden in his shoe. He had made at least 10 such videos, police said.
Police said Aashish Sharma, who works at a corporate law firm in Noida, had concealed the camera under the lace of his right shoe and was tailing women at the mall. He was caught when the manager of a store noticed him following different women — all wearing skirts — and trying to get his right foot close to them. Sharma tried to flee when the manager raised an alarm but was caught by the mall’s security personnel.
The police were called in and during questioning Sharma reportedly confessed to making the videos and also took out the hidden camera.
He said he had bought the camera online and was making the videos for himself. Police, however, were going through his social media accounts and mobile phones to check if he circulated or posted the videos online.
“We arrested him and found the hidden camera in his right shoe. A 16GB memory card was found attached with the camera. There were some objectionable videos on it. We have seized the device for further probe,” said Surender Kumar, additional DCP (south).
A senior officer who did not wish to be identified said the memory card had 10 such recordings. “Sharma’s interrogation revealed he had visited the mall last Friday too. Ten objectionable videos were found in the memory card of the hidden camera. Though he denied uploading or circulating them, we are checking his social media accounts and mobile phones,” the officer said.
Sharma, a native of Faridabad, was arrested under sections 354C and 354D (outraging modesty of women) of the Indian Penal Code by Saket police. He was later released on bail.
