Congress on Thursday said SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's statement regretting taking the support of Kalyan Singh was not enough as many questions remain unanswered.
"Congress has been raising questions on it since the beginning of their alliance. Mulayam Singh has realised it only now but many questions still remain unanswered," party spokesperson Mohan Prakash told reporters in New Delhi.
"In the last Lok Sabha polls, I had to take support of some 'galat tatva' (wrong elements) to keep communal forces at bay from forming government at the Centre. This confused the secular forces especially my Muslim brothers and their feelings were hurt. I accept my mistake and seek pardon of the Muslim community," Yadav said in a statement in Lucknow.
The SP, which had won only 23 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in UP, had accepted that it core Muslim voters had drifted to others parties.
Riding on the support of minority votes and other sections, Congress had performed better in the state than the previous election and won 22 seats. The party is hoping to come to power in the state in the next assembly election in 2012 and has decided to go it alone.
