A heavily armed group of Maoists abducted eight persons, including three employees of Hindalco Bauxite Mining Company, a private contractor and four labourers near a village in Jharkhand’s Gumla district, 160 km from Ranchi on Tuesday.

The extremists stopped the vehicle in which they were traveling and told them to come out before setting it ablaze.

The Maoists later torched six dumpers, two tractors and two earth moving machines near another village.

The extremists belonged to a regional splinter group of the CPI (Maoist).

Gumla Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar told HT that the extremists burnt the trucks to pressurise transporters and contractors to pay them a ‘levy’.
