A 52-year-old man was chased and gunned down by four unidentified men in Sarita Vihar area of southeast Delhi on Friday night, the police said.

Relatives of the victim, Bheem Singh, alleged that he had been getting extortion calls for the past one year, but the police sat on his complaint.
Singh had a dispute with a priest in the area. A resident of Aali village, Singh was a self-proclaimed pradhan of the urbanised village.

He used to eke out a living by renting out accommodations. The victim used to own an entire colony there and several other properties in Haryana and other parts of Delhi. He is survived by nine children.

The incident was reported around 9.30 pm when Singh was riding pillion on the motorcycle of one of his employees — Pradeep Mishra.

Two masked men intercepted the bike and beat up Mishra. They then opened fire on Singh. When Singh ran for his life, he was chased and gunned down.

“He also climbed a wall to save himself from the attackers, but to no avail,” said a senior police officer.

The police said six rounds were fired and four hit Singh.

In the meanwhile, Mishra managed to inform Singh’s family and he was taken to the nearby Indraprastha Apollo hospital, where he was declared dead after some time.

Angry residents shouted slogans against police inaction.

“We have some strong clues in the case and are working on it. We have spoken to the family members, they never said Singh had received any sort of threat or extortion call,” said OP Mishra, deputy commissioner of police (southeast).

A case of murder has been registered at the Sarita Vihar police station.

The police said they have recovered the empty cartridges from the crime scene and were ascertaining the involvement of known criminals in the area.
