Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Saturday blamed the Samajwadi Party for the trouble at Ghodi Bachheda village in Greater Noida.

She also claimed that while her government has more than doubled the compensation for land, others only offered promises to the farmers.

Speaking at the inauguration of Gautam Buddha University, Mayawati condemned the August 13 incident in which five villagers from Ghodi Bachheda were killed in police firing.

She said her opponents had hatched a conspiracy with an eye on the coming Lok Sabha elections.

She said the Samajwadi Party government had promised to hike the compensation package while acquiring the land. But it never kept the promise.

“The landowners at Ghodi Bachheda and other villages are demanding higher compensation with effect from 2006 when the Samajwadi Party was in power,” the chief minister pointed out.

“Soon after taking over, I formed a committee and hiked the compensation from Rs 402 to Rs 850 per square metre, which is almost more than double. No other government has given such a hike to farmers. It was effective from April 2007,” she said.

“My government had accepted the demand of the Ghodi Bachheda farmers and they called off the agitation. But as the compensation cannot take effect from 2006, we agreed to pay ex gratia payments to them. Now the opponents are provoking farmers of other villages,” she said.

Mayawati said that the villages around Noida would get the same water supply and sewerage systems and other amenities as Noida and Greater Noida. Plus, she has allocated Rs 105 crore for modernizing the police force.
