Continuing to fire salvos at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Union Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury on Thursday accused her of being "soft" on senior state police officials in the Aarushi murder case.
"Please ask Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawatiji why she has not taken a decision to suspend the Inspector General of Police (IG)," Chowdhary said in a specific reply to a question on transfer of senior police officials for "inappropriate" language for a minor.
The ministry has been consistent in its approach and always demanded strong action against the officials involved in using such language for a minor, the minister added.
Chowdhury was speaking to the media after a national consultation on relief and rehabilitation package for rape victims.
The Uttar Pradesh Police is under fire from all quarters for its shoddy investigation into the twin murder of the schoolgirl and the domestic help. The then Inspector General of Police (Meerut) Gurdarshan Singh had said the two were found in an "objectionable condition" by father Rajesh Talwar.
The ministry had expressed its displeasure over the language used to describe the sequence of events in the case.
Chowdhary had even said that the ministry was examining all options, including a defamation suit.
She also emphasised strong action against parents in case of children being caught on the wrong side of the law and said the ministry was working on the subject and will send its recommendations to amend the law to bring parents within its ambit.
