In a letter written to Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, Mayor Kanwar Sain on Friday asked the Delhi government to check and control the number of plastic bags, which have been banned in the city but are still in constant use.
He noted that the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has imposed a ban on use of plastic bags which do not conform to the specification requirements as approved by it.
Despite this, "the use of defective plastic bags in Delhi is common which is adversely affecting the solid waste management," he wrote, according to an MCD statement.
The dumping of packed waste in drains is resulting in disruption to flow of water and causing waterlogging during rainy season, he added while requesting the Chief Minister to look into the matter urgently.
The MCD has been under fire for waterlogging in the city during pre-monsoon rains this year. The civic body has claimed to have completed 98 per cent of de-silting in the city, but a number of councillors have complained that the work was not satisfactory in their areas.
