Cracking down on parking mafia and increasing the number of surface parking lots in the city has resulted in the MCD registering a 100% hike in its revenue.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said that such an increase took place due to the reforms it has brought in its parking policies.
Compared to Rs 61.13 crore earned in 2009-2010, the Remunerative Project Cell of the MCD earned Rs 122.08 crore this year.
RP Cell is responsible for looking after the collection of licence fee from contracts allotted for operation of parking and it also collects one-time charges by the Transport Department of Delhi government on behalf of the MCD.
According to MCD officials, the increase in revenue has been possible due to the centralization of parking related work at the headquarters level.
Earlier, parking was done at the zonal level. After the reforms, the number of parking sites under the MCD increased from 116 to 191.
The civic body is currently working towards converting more illegal parking sites into legal ones to increase its revenue. The second step taken by the MCD was to check parking of vehicles beyond permitted area by the parking contractors. Those found guilty of parking more cars than the allotted number were fined.
"The Transport Department was persuaded to update revenue collected on account of one-time charges. This all helped increase revenue," said an MCD official.
