A day after Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal promised to transform Delhi into London if his party wins the MCD polls in April, he clarified on Monday that he only meant ‘Delhi would be as clean as London’.
On being questioned on the backlash and how they planned to do this, Kejriwal said, “I want to clarify that I have not said that we will turn Delhi into London. Delhi has its own culture and its heart. Delhi’s people are very good. Delhi will remain Delhi.”
He also added that in terms of sanitation, Delhi still has a lot to hope for. “When we go to western countries, including London, we see a high level of cleanliness there. Delhi will be made as clean as London, which only the AAP can do.”
Memes comparing the crowded Rajiv Chowk metro station with the tube stations in London during peak hours and jokes about salaries being paid in pounds soon surfaced online.
“In the assembly polls you gave us 67 seats but this time do not leave any such gap. If we win the MCD polls, we will spruce up Delhi and make it look like London within a year,” the chief minister had said, when he was campaigning in Uttam Nagar on Sunday.
Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari said that before promising to make the national capital a city like London, the AAP had also promised to make Punjab like Canada in the state elections. He added it seems that Kejriwal has become a dream merchant.
“Neither former chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who also promised to make a city like Paris, had any ntension to do anything nor Kejriwal has any intentions to develop Delhi. We want to ask Kejriwal that if he wants to make Delhi as beautiful as London then what efforts have been made by his government,” he said.
Kejriwal has been blaming the BJP and Congress, for the bad sanitation in Delhi. “The BJP and Congress have been in control of the municipal corporations for the past 20 years. The two of them have destroyed the MCD,” he said on Monday.
He also said that just as AAP had done well in the fields of education, power, health and water since taking over, they would be able to ensure that Delhi becomes as clean as London within a year if they win the upcoming elections, which are due in April.
