Keeping the Commonwealth Games 2010 in view, the MCD is planning to upgrade 1,000 of its urinals in New Delhi into waterless ones by June next year.

A proposal in this regard was passed at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the civic body in New Delhi.

The MCD has already set up two waterless urinals near Town Hall and ISBT. The technology will help conserve water and deal with the problem of foul smell, officials said.

The engineering department of MCD will build the urinals at a cost of 4.5 lakh. The maintenance and operation will be handed over to a company which will be given advertisement rights, they said.

Most of these urinals will come up near Commonwealth Games venues or along the routes important for the event. The MCD expects to earn Rs five crore every year after leasing out the urinals for five years.
