A 23-year-old merchant navy officer was arrested with fake $10,000 when he was trying to exchange it with Indian currency from a shop in Connaught Place.
Vishal Singh, currently working with Maersk Crewing India, was apprehended from Palika Bazar. Singh is a resident of Ghaziabad.
"He approached Ravi Mahajan of Shakti Forex for exchanging five notes of $100 denomination. The trader being in the profession for the last 17 years immediately identified the currency as fake. He then informed the police," said KC Dwivedi, additional commissioner of police (New Delhi).
"They alerted beat constables who, on further checking, recovered 95 more $100 notes from him. Subsequently, these recovered currency notes were checked at HDFC Bank, where it was reconfirmed that they were counterfeit," Dwivedi added.
Police said Singh has visited numerous countries and seaports and taking advantage of his job he was able to cross many channels at various ports without being checked. All the currency notes seized from him were of 1999 series. However, the recovered notes bear a fresh look and do not have any effect of weathering and wear or tear encountered while passing through routine transactions.
Singh said he got these notes in exchange for notes of lower denomination from a money changer at London but could not produce any receipt.
