Five peopkle of a family escaped death by a whisker when a Delhi Metro crane weighing over 400 tonnes fell on their Honda Civic car at Jor Bagh around 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Construction is on in the area for the Metro’s Central Secretariat-Gurgaon section. Shashi Dharan, chief of Bharti Exhibitions, and four of his family members were on their way to their Aya Nagar home from Connaught Place when the crane fell on their car.
“The right side of the car was completely smashed but no one was injured in the incident,” the police said. It was Shashi Dharan who informed the police about the incident. When the police reached the spot, the crane had covered the road.
Besides Dharan, his wife Saly, daughter Shruthi, niece Gish Thomas and driver Nishtos were in the car. Dharan said that family was fortunate that the crane didn’t completely smash the car.
Dharan claimed as soon as the crane fell, Metro staff present at the site ran away. “I yelled at them, ‘I am not dead, I am alive. Please help us’. But they ran away from the spot. I had to help myself and my family out of the car and called the PCR.”
“The hook of the Hydra crane, a small crane that doesn’t move heavy objects, came out of the barricade and broke the rear windshield of the car,” said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesman. “We will compensate the owner,” he said. The police have filed a case and investigations are on.
