A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was lowered at the Mandi House construction site on Friday to start tunneling towards the upcoming ITO Metro station. The length of the tunnel will be 700 metres.
The machine will be assembled beneath the ground before tunneling work begins. It will connect the 9.37-km Central Secretariat - Kashmere Gate corridor.
The seven stations on the corridor will be Central Secretariat, Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate. The DMRC intends to provide a connection between Central Secretariat and Mandi House by 2014.
This corridor will connect major monuments of Old Delhi such as Jama Masjid, Delhi Gate and Red Fort with Janpath.
Before lowering the machine at Mandi House, the DMRC dig a tunnel at the Janpath Metro site, which is part of a corridor that is expected to ease the rush at the Rajiv Chowk station.
The tunneling at Janpath was part of the construction of the 3-km link between Central Secretariat and Mandi House.
Mandi House will be an inter-change station and is expected to become a hub for Metro users in the city.
