In another major setback to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), a labourer was killed at the under-construction Ashok Park Metro Station in Punjabi Bagh early Wednesday morning.
The 22-year-old victim - a resident of Uttar Pradesh - was killed when the sling chains of a crane carrying an iron beam snapped and the heavy object hit his shoulders.
The police said the workers had complained about the faulty sling chain to the company that handles the construction work a few days ago but no action was taken. The safety supervisor of the site has now been detained and
Sharad Aggarwal, DCP (West), said a case has been registered for negligent conduct with respect to machinery and causing death due to negligence at the Punjabi Bagh police station against Naresh Chand Sharma, the safety supervisor, and Anil Dubey, the supervisor.
"The supervisory staff of the labourers had complained to the construction company about the faulty chain but they did not take any action," Aggarwal said.
"We have detained the safety supervisor of the company and will arrest him soon,"
Metro officials said the incident took place around 5.45 a.m. on Wednesday. The station is part of the upcoming Inderlok-Mundka line.
The victim, identified as Vicky Singh, a construction worker, was guiding the movement of the iron beam that was reportedly being lifted by a crane. When the crane's cables snapped, the beam fell and hit his shoulder. He was rushed to Maharaja Agrasen hospital where he died.
DMRC spokesperson, Anuj Dayal said, "The beam hit the worker on his shoulder, causing an injury due to which he died."
Dayal added that it was not a major accident.
The chief project manager of the DMRC and other officials are investigating the accident and a first information report (FIR) has been lodged, Dayal added. DMRC spokesperson said that Singh was an employee of contractor M/s IDEB-SUCG JV.
