Delhi metro has incorporated major changes in its proposed extension of network under phase 3. The new lines will extensively cover Ring Road, one of the most congested and busy areas in the national capital.
Metro is also likely to spread its network to neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, making this phase the largest network expansion with nine corridors.
The plan also includes a new corridor between Rajouri Garden and Dhaula Kuan and also taking the proposed Kalindi Kunj-Malviya Nagar corridor via Jamia Nagar.
These changes were made as Delhi cabinet in October suggested the Metro to cover more areas. Earlier, Delhi Metro had planned to keep Rajouri Garden-Dhaula Kuan stretch in phase 4, said a source in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
“The addition of corridors have been included in the detailed project report, which we are going to present by mid February for Centre’s approval,” said Kumar Keshav, director (projects), DMRC.
The new route map will include six corridors including Jahangirpuri to Badli, Central Secretariat to Red Fort, Ashok Park to Delhi Gate, Rajouri Garden to Dhaula Kuan, Anand Vihar to Yamuna Vihar and Noida to Malviya Nagar.
“In addition, we are expecting three more corridors to be included in phase 3. These are proposed extension of Line 6 from Badarpur up to Faridabad, Line 1 from Dilshad Garden up to Ghaziabad in Haryana and Line 3 from Noida up to Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh,” said Keshav. These lines, however, will not be included in the DPR as these would be funded by the authorities of the respective states.
As per the proposed DPR, metro track will be laid on over 100 km, while the previous report had proposed to cover 69.57 km.
“We are expecting to get approvals for the project by April and start work by middle of this year. We would start civil construction of all lines together so that we can complete the project by middle of 2016,” said Keshav.
