Imagine you are travelling in a metro train in the underground section and suddenly the train stops and all lights go off.
The air-conditioning too stops working and the only source of light you are left with is of the mobile phone.
This is exactly what happened between Vishwavidyalya and Vidhan Sabha metro stations on Wednesday afternoon.
Passengers complained there was no light inside the train for at least five minutes.
“It was scary. With no light and no AC (which is the source of fresh air inside the metro train) inside the tunnel, I started feeling claustrophobic within couple of minutes,” said Deepika Chandok, a Delhi University student. “At Vidhan Sabha station, I came out and took a three-wheeler to Connaught Place.”
Commuters said the train originated from Vishwavidyalya station at 1.15 p.m. and stopped before the Vidhan Sabha station.
A commuter said for about 10 minutes recorded messages were played that the train will resume its onward journey soon.
“Suddenly the train operator announced that there was some technical problem and people should keep calm. And then the lights went off,” said Devendra Gupta, a bank executive.
He said it was one of those newly-inducted Bombardier trains. While the power came back within five minutes, the train resumed its journey after another five minutes.
“At Vidhna Sabha, all passengers were asked to get down and the train left without passengers,” said Gupta.
A spokesperson of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said there was a problem in the static inverter (which is part of the motor) of the train.
“The train operator had to switch off the train and restart it. That’s why there was no power in the train for a short duration,” said the spokesperson. “We have withdrawn the train from operations and are examining the problem.”
The fault affected the metro services on the section.
Since the frequency of metro on the section is three minutes there was huge rush of passengers on all stations.
