A Mewat-based 'cattle snatcher', with a Rs. 50,000 bounty on his head and wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of a Delhi Police constable during a high-speed getaway in northwest Delhi, was arrested by the special cell, police said on Tuesday.

Arif, 22, was one of the eight to nine 'Mewati cattle lifters' who had injured three persons, including a Delhi Police constable, and killed constable Naresh Kumar Verma while trying to lift cattle from Bharat Nagar on the night of May 19, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell).

"Arif disclosed that he and his other associates had deliberately crushed constable Naresh to death. Based on a specific tip-off, he was apprehended from near a cold storage at Naujheel in Mathura on October 29," DCP Yadav said.

On the night between May 17 and 18, the police received information about a quarrel outside a community Hall at Shakurpur's K block.

When the police reached the spot an injured person identified as Sitaraman, 30, revealed that eight to nine persons onboard a Tata 407 tempo, who had come to lift cows from the area, had assaulted him.

In a bid to foil their escape, a constable on his bike tried to chase the speeding Tempo but hit a divider and got injured.

"That's when constable Naresh Verma joined the chase and tried to overtake the tempo. The men on the tempo pelted stones at him and rammed it against his bike causing him to fall down before crushing his head," said the officer.

The cattle snatchers then fled from the spot.
