The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a Delhi High Court order sentencing four Mid Day journalists to four months in jail for contempt of court by publishing allegations of misconduct against former Chief Justice of India YK Sabharwal. The stay will be effective till the final disposal of the case.

Admitting an appeal by the four journalists against the sentence, the court appointed senior advocate TR Andhyrujina as amicus curiae or friend of the court to assist it in the case and fixed January 16 for further hearing. A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat, however, dismissed the application filed by a group of eminent citizens who had reiterated the allegations against Sabharwal and sought the same punishment as given to the journalists on September 21.
