Eight schoolgirls were injured when a minibus turned turtle in Kondli area of east Delhi on Monday morning.
The police said the driver was trying to overtake a chartered bus and was speeding at the time of the accident.
One of the girls was seriously injured while others were discharged after being administered first aid.
The police said the conductor of the bus who fled the scene after the incident was driving the minibus.
The schoolgirls, aged between 15 and 16 years, are all residents of Khoda village. All of them are students of Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Mayur Vihar Phase-II.
The police said the accident occurred on the East Kondli Main Road when the minibus, trying to overtake a bus in a bid to pick more passengers, crashed into the central verge around 7 am on Monday.
The students were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where the condition of one of them is said to be serious.
The police said they have traced the owner of the minibus and were questioning him about the whereabouts of the conductor. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered at the New Ashok Nagar police station.
“We have learnt the driver was speeding and he was driving rashly. In its bid to overtake another vehicle, he rammed into the central verge and the minibus turned turtle due to the impact. Eight school girls who were trapped in the bus were taken out and rushed to the hospital,” said O.P. Mishra, additional deputy commissioner of police (east).
The police said there were other passengers in the minibus at the time of the accident.
