Well into the second week of December, but winter has failed to make a mark in Delhi with day temperatures soaring past the expected levels, bringing about mugginess considered unusual for this time of the year.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was 27.9 degrees Celsius, four degrees more than what is considered normal this time of the year. In fact, this is one of the highest maximum temperatures recorded in December in Delhi, the highest ever being 29.3 degrees Celsius in 1987.
The minimum temperature, too, was in double digits at 13 degrees Celsius, with the normal being just 9 degrees. The “normal” number is the average of the daily temperatures for the past 100-odd years.
This has been the trend since the beginning of December when day temperatures started rising.
“This warmth will remain for a few more days. We cannot predict at present if there will be a steep fall in the temperature in the coming days,” said the duty officer at the Safdarjung office of the India Meteorological Department.
“The warm Southerly winds are blowing in Delhi because a mass of clouds in the region is not letting the chill set in with the Northwesterly winds,” he added. This means the wait for the season of chill got a bit longer.
“Early November was cooler, giving us the hope that winter might have advanced this year. That would have meant a bonus period of the most happening season in Delhi. But looks like the opposite has happened,” said Savita Bajpai, resident of R.K. Puram in South Delhi.
As per the meteorologist, the mass of clouds arriving in the region from the Northwestern parts has not been letting the day’s heat escape, hence the warmth.
“This is a period when day temperatures fall and the sting in the air increases. Last year around this time the minimum temperature was moving around 7 degrees Celsius, which is a couple of degrees lower than the normal mark,” he said.
Wednesday will be as warm, with maximum temperature reaching 27 degrees Celsius and the minimum, again, not lower than 13 degrees Celsius, the Met department said.
