A first year student of Hansraj College, who had gone missing in mysterious circumstances from the college hostel, has been traced by the Delhi Police to Mumbai.
The boy, identified as Pradeep Singh, a First-Year Physics Honours student, was found working with a dosa vendor at Juhu Beach. Singh’s disappearance had sent the college authorities into a tizzy and conspiracy theories were abound, especially as he held the post of cultural counsellor at the college.
Singh went missing on March 26. The annual examinations were under way and Singh had to appear for a practical exam. Singh had left his mobile phone behind and could not be contacted for the next few days by his family. Ultimately, his father, Shiv Das Singh, arrived in Delhi from their village in Chandauli near Varanasi.
When he reached the college hostel, he was told that Singh had not been seen for the last many days. The matter was finally reported to the local police on April 1. A missing complaint was lodged, notices were issued and all possible means were adopted to trace Singh but with little success.
On Saturday, Singh called his mother in Chandauli. She informed her husband who in turn informed the police about the call made by his son. The number was traced to Mumbai. The number was of an eating joint on Juhu Beach. One Krishna answered the call and when inquiries were made, he said Singh had been working with them for around 10 days.
The Mumbai police were then informed and told to keep a watch and when Singh arrived at the shop for work he was detained. His father along with a police team has left for Mumbai.
“He has been traced to Mumbai. His father has gone to bring him back. He was under stress as exams were round the corner and he hadn’t studied,” said S.R. Arora, principal, Hansraj College.
Sources said Singh had spent all the money sent by his family on his friends. He had not deposited the exam and hostel fees. “He had won the college election unopposed. He, however, fell in bad company and soon drifted from studies. As he was the college’s cultural counsellor, he started enjoying the attention. However, as exams neared, he got nervous. He couldn’t tell his parents what he had done in the last one year and decided to quietly leave the hostel,” a source said.
