The mother of a missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmad said she has been “assured” of support by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in finding her son.
Biotechnology student Najeeb Ahmad went missing on October 14 after an alleged altercation with members from RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
“Akhilesh ji has assured me of all help. He said the force (UP Police) would be sent to look for my son. He said Najeeb is child of his state. Shame on Delhi Police that police from UP is coming to find my son,” Fatima Nafees, Ahmad’s mother said at a protest rally on Wednesday.
JNU students’ union (JNUSU) held a protest rally demanding action in the missing student’s case. The students were stopped near Parliament street police station from marching ahead.
“You have seen him in Aligarh and Dharbhanga but you are still unable to find him. It has been thirty-eight days since he is missing and yet he is untraceable,” said Mohit Pandey, JNUSU president.
Nafees alleged her son is being held captive and criticized the police.
“If Delhi Police think they cannot find my son then should have told me in the beginning. If they have any shame left they should find him in next 24 hours else the world will spit on them,” she said.
Former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar also joined students in the protest rally. Kumar raised slogans demanding justice for Ahmad, however, he did not address students.
Umar Khalid, a JNU student, said incidents like beating of Ahmad are sending a signal that minorities and Dalits are not safe in universities.
“The first thing Najeeb’s mother aid was she will take him home when he is found. Oppressed castes, minority is being targeted at universities. They want to throw everyone out. By beating one Najeeb they are giving a message to all Muslim students to create fear,” he said.
