The elder sister of Harsh Vardhan, former health minister of Delhi and BJP MLA from Krishna Nagar, was drugged and dumped outside All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims) in an unconscious state by her daughter-in-law on August 24.

The east Delhi police on Tuesday arrested the victim’s daughter-in-law, identified as Reena Singhal.

Talking to the Hindustan Times, Harsh Vardhan confirmed that his sister was tricked by her daughter-in-law and that she is still recuperating in Aiims.

Reena had allegedly drugged the victim Asha Singhal (60) with intent to kill and grab her property and wealth. Reena’s husband is physically challenged and suffers from brain tumour.

Prabhakar, deputy commissioner of police (east) said the arrest came following investigation into a missing complaint about Asha that was lodged on August 27 at Anand Vihar police station by Reena only.

“She had told us that Asha left her D-29, Anand Vihar residence to meet her younger son at his house in Paschim Vihar. According to Reena, Asha had left in a TSR but local enquiries revealed she was put inside a WagonR car by Reena who also took help of a local tailor Naresh,” the DCP said.

Investigations into the matter indicated foul play and the needle of suspicion pointed towards Reena. It was also learnt that Reena had been previously involved in a case (registered in Anand Vihar police station in 2010) of drugging and consequent stealing. Asha’s mobile phone was found switched off but during technical surveillance, it was found that the phone was switched off at Anand Vihar itself, Prabhakar said.

Reena was subjected to sustained interrogation during which she confessed to the crime.
