Delhi government's move to make registration of marriages mandatory ran into rough weather on Monday with a number of MLAs opposing the Bill on Mandatory Registration of Marriages in Delhi. It has now been referred to the select committee for discussion.

"Many religions have their own Acts. Before taking such an important step, views of all communities must be taken," said Shoaib Iqbal, an MLA.

Once the Bill is passed, those failing to register their marriage within 60 days time will be fined Rs. 1,000.

The Delhi Assembly, however, did give its nod to the Indian Stamp (Delhi Amendment) Bill 2012 and the Court fees (Delhi Amendment) Bill 2012.

"The amendment will help the government collect its legitimate stamp duty on increase in authorised share capital by companies," said AK Walia, urban development minister.
