A mob rained blows on a rape victim and attacked her with knives on a road in east Delhi late on Thursday. The victim claimed the wife of the rape accused had instigated the mob, adding that a few policemen who saw the assault did not try to save her.
Thirty two-year-old Sunita was beaten up in Buddha Park, near Mandawali, leaving her with a broken finger and injuries on her hands. Sunita’s landlord Mukesh was arrested for allegedly raping her on April 3. Sunita is separated from her husband and has two sons.
According to Sunita, Mukesh's wife Seema gathered a group of 25-30 men and beat her up around 11 pm near her house. Ajay Chaudhery, DCP (East), said Seema, the wife of the accused, had been arrested for voluntarily causing hurt and three other accused were absconding.
The rape victim claimed that Seema took out her frustration on her (the victim) since she had got her husband arrested. On the other hand, Seema claimed Sunita had asked for Rs 2 lakh to withdraw the case.
“People thrashed me with knives and shoes, besides raining blows. I could see a few men in the group dancing, as they kicked me from behind. At least three policemen were standing nearby but they didn't do anything to save me,” said Sunita.
A police officer said the alleged rape victim was heavily drunk when she was attacked. Meanwhile, a team from the National Commission for Women met the victim and demanded an action taken report from the police.
