Newly-formed Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday accused Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi of giving undue favours to some corporate houses, and said the Congress party did not expose his corruption, since its leaders in the state benefitted from land allotments.
Kejriwal alleged that the Modi government had entered into an agreement with Ahmedabad-based Adani group to buy electricity at a rate higher than what the state-owned Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) had offered in 2007.
“A few days later Adani started blackmailing the state government and demanded coal supply. Modi overruled GMDC and allowed Adani to get 50% coal supply….Gujarat government gave them coal and bought costly electricity in return,” Kejriwal said.
He also charged Modi with allotting more than 14,000 acres of land to Adani in Kutch area of the state for setting up a special economic zone (SEZ) at a throwaway price. The Adani group denied all the allegations, saying the company had followed due process of law in all its dealings.Kejriwal also alleged that the Modi government had virtually gifted 20% of the stake of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation to two companies.
“Modi has gifted away 20% of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation’s (GSPC) stake in the Krishna-Godavari Basin to two companies, Geo Global and Jubilant Enpro Private limited,” Kejriwal alleged.
Repeated attempts by HT to contact the Geo Global Resources office in Gandhinagar met with no
Jubilant Energy denied Kejriwal’s allegations. “Jubilant Energy (subsidiary of Jubilant Enpro) won this block under international competitive bidding under the third round of New Exploration Licensing Policy of the Government of India. Jubilant Energy is a partner in the block and pays fully for its 10% share of expenditure,” the company said in a statement.
“Jubilant is the original partner in this block along with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd (GSPC), as the operator of the block. This block was awarded by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, Government of India along with 22 other blocks at the same time to various parties, both PSU’s and private sector.
This block was originally an exploration block and the first discovery in this block was made much later in 2005,” it statwed.
Kejriwal also said the Gujarat government had been allotting concessional plots of land to MPs and MLAs in prime areas of Gandhinagar for constructing houses, but most of them sold these plots at much higher rates.
