The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), unlike earlier, has failed to generate much buzz around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Delhi rally scheduled to be held on Saturday.
According to sources, despite the municipal corporations, apart from state unit, having being roped in to make the rally a success, the response has not been great as far as social media is concerned.
Unlike the other Modi rallies — before the 2013 assembly elections in 2013 and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections — that trended on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, the ‘Abhinandan rally’ is not being talked about much.
Instead, a different hashtag (#DelhiAsksPMModi), questioning the promises made by the Modi government and the BJP, was trending on Twitter with 45,000 tweets at the time of filing this report.
Sources in BJP said the party’s IT cell and the social media cell (Samvad cell) were at loggerheads and that was affecting the social media-related activities of the party. “All this is happening at a time when assembly elections are on the anvil and before a much-anticipated rally of prime minister Modi ji in Delhi. The
outdoor media publicity team has done a good job putting up posters and hoardings across the city. But the youth, who are usually more active on the social media, are not being targeted properly,” said a senior BJP leader.
The Samvad cell of Delhi BJP, however, said they would be tweeting live about the rally that starts at 11am at Ramlila Maidan using the hash tag #DelhiWithModi. “This hash tag has been decided by the national team and will be supported by the BJP’s Samvad Cell. A number of independent volunteers have been tweeting about the rally,” said Khemchand Sharma, convener of the Samvad cell.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been giving a stiff competition to the party in Delhi, has been making extensive use of the social media to highlight issues
and criticise policies announced by the Centre. BJP too had made use of the social media tools effectively during their election campaigning but the party has not been visible on the platform after the Lok Sabha elections.
