Merely three days after the booth to register volunteers at the Ramlila Madian was set up, the booth is registering more than one lakh people every day. By 5pm on Sunday, the figure had crossed three lakh.
“By 5pm, a total of 3,01,343 had registered themselves and the number is increasing by each passing day. We are just asking the people to give basic details like their names, address, phone numbers and the number of hours they can spare for volunteer work,” said Chandra Sekhar Joshi, one of the volunteers at the booth.
Joshi, who hails from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, has come to Delhi to extend support to Hazare’s fight against corruption.
Those who have registered so far will be asked to do a number of jobs like cleaning the surface, distributing water packets, pamphlets distribution. managing the crowd and taking care of the security. These volunteers are carrying out the work throughout the day in shifts allotted to them.
The organisers India Against Corruption (IAC) had earlier said that it was the volunteers — as against paid staff — who are running the whole show at the Ramlila Maidan.
“As on today, we have a little more than 250 full-time volunteers. About a 100 of them are working part time for specific duties,” said Manish Sisodia, an IAC member.
